Alicia Candiani is this year’s recipient of the annual Turner Prize for Excellence in Visual Art given by the Turner Print Museum, University of California, United States.
The Turner Prize is a print selected by the Turner Acquisition Committee to extend the range, intent and mission of the Turner Print Collection which features more than 2,000 pieces. It is purchased by the Turner Board of Directors and awarded in honour of an organization or individual that has a history of supporting the arts in the museum’s region. “The Awakening of the Servant”, the print awarded is a large lithography from 1994 which also received the 1st Prize in the San Juan Latin American Print Biennial in San Juan Puerto Rico (1995) and is part of the Housatonic Museum of Art (USA), Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña (Puerto Rico) and National Museum of Fine Print (Argentina)public collections.
Candiani’s print will be also on view from March 4th to April 4th 2009 in Bare: Women’s Images in Print , an exhibition from the Turner Collection. This survey of the use of the female form as subject will be counterpoint to commentary in changing trends of discourse. This exhibition is part of Women’s History Month and includes as “ an added bonus, a newly-purchased print, “The Awakening of the Servant” by the internationally acclaimed Argentine artist Alicia Candiani, which will be on display and added to the permanent print collection in the name of the Avenue 9 Gallery” the curator says.
